Our tripod gets about as much use as the money belt that Rick Steves so strongly recommended.  But, that is going to change.  Because I love our tripod --- it's light, small, and incredibly handy.  And . . . it allows us to take night photos like these that I'm sharing with you today.

Houses of Parliament, Big Ben, and the London Eye

To be fair, we only pulled out the tripod because we took a Groupon-purchased night photography course with Adrian at OneVision Studio. Our group of twelve or so folks, armed with DSLRs and tripods, half-froze as we walked from the London Eye to the Houses of Parliament on a bitterly cold London night. The class focused on taking slow exposure shots at night, something that we've done in the past but never with the tripod and facing traffic. The class, itself, didn't help us much with technique but Adrian gave us pointers and pushed us out of our photography comfort zone, which is always a good thing. All in all, I loved the effect and can't wait to use this approach in other cities.

Wow these shots are amazing. I think you've inspired me to pull out my tripod and give it another go!

Thanks Ris! It's fun to play with the tripod -- definitely take it out for a spin some night.

These photos are amazing! Definitely bust out the tripod more often if this is the result.

I agree. This photos are beautiful and well worth the night out in the cold!

Thanks Denise! I wasn't too happy about the cold when we were there but glad we got good photos out of it.

Agreed again. Your photos are really great and you have the night photography technique down for sure. Have you ever tried 'painting' with light photography at night. Another fun technique to try :)

Cherina, We have tried the "painting" technique --- so much fun! I haven't quite mastered making my handwriting pretty enough with the flashlight though. :)

beautiful photos! I love the blue London Eye. What kind of tripod do you use?

Thanks Maggie! We use a Manfrotto 732yb at about 2.5 pounds which we purchased along with a Manfrotto bag that had a separate tripod holder for around $85 on discount at our local camera shop. I found it on Amazon too: http://www.amazon.com/Manfrotto-732YB-482K-Tripod-Backpack/dp/B004C2KDFE

You can definitely get much lighter tripods made by Gitzo but they start at around $500 and we didn't want to chalk up that much cash! The Manfrotto is light enough that we don't mind it on our backs and sturdy enough that it holds up our D7000 with our 18-200 VR lens.

What light tripod do you use?
Unless I plan to go out and take night photos, I can't see taking a tripod along. More hassle than it's worth, right? But maybe not, those photos are awesome...

And, yeah, we only really use it for night photos but we've decided that this year we're going to try doing HDR photography for which a tripod is essential. So, we're lugging it around everywhere and hoping that it will inspire us to use it more!

also would like to know what tripod you use! i've been searching for a lightweight one that can hold the weight of my 18-200mm lens..

Wow, these photos are rad. x3 on wanting to know what kind of tripod you use. We carried one with us for awhile, but it was heavy and flimsy and we didn't use it enough to justify hauling it around in our backpacks. Which is silly, because I think the use of a tripod would drastically improve our photography. :)
01/31/2012 13:11
The first one we had was super heavy so we ditched it early on but we like the Manfrotto 732yb a lot --- it's 2.5 pounds so not TOO heavy and quite sturdy. We looked at the Gitzo carbon fiber tripods but they were just way too expensive. Which one did you have before?

These are gorgeous! Such a different take on the city, not something you see often. I love the monuments and historic architecture as much as the next person, but different is always good as well as intriguing. Looking forward to more.

Thanks so much Lori! Because we're in Europe in the winter, we're getting a lot of nighttime shots in and it's fun to see something different.

Wonderful photos. I've just started in with some night photography too and having great fun. And in response to a comment above - in my photography class the instructor recommended the Manfrotto brand as a reasonably priced choice. It holds my 18-200 lens with no problem. If you had wads of dough then a light weight carbon tripod running about $1000 would be the way to go.

Leigh, That's actually what we use! We have a Manfrotto tripod that we really like. We looked at the Gitzo carbon fiber tripods but they were way out of our price range.
