Tulips in Istanbul

Striped tulips

This is how it happened:

  • Tulips are native to Central Asia and the Anatolia region of Turkey
  • The Ottoman Empire was the first to commercially cultivate tulips
  • The mid-18th century in Ottoman history is known as the "Tulip Era" because it was a time of peace during which the growth and cultivation of tulips was an emblem of success and affluence.
  • Tulips are grown near Turkish mosques because the curvature of a tulip looks very similar to the Arabic word for Allah.
  • Turkey began exporting tulips to Holland sometime in the 17th or 18th century.
  • Today, most of the tulips grown in Istanbul are imported bulbs from Holland.

Gorgeous! I had heard that tulips were from the Ottoman empire but didn't know they are supposed to resemble the shape of the word for Allah. Cool!

I know when I hear of tulip season I think of the Netherlands, but it's lovely to see tulips from around the world. I had no idea they originated in the Ottoman Empire - fascinating little tidbit. :)

Christy, I thought so, too! I think it's so interesting that they originated in Turkey but they're now importing their tulips from Holland. Strange, isn't it?

I love tulips. I can never take enough photos of them. We recently had a tulip day here, so I took some pics: http://kootvela.blogspot.com/2012/05/tulpiu-zydejimo-svente-vingio-parke.html Istanbul is on my bucket list, I hope to see it one day.

Wow - I had no idea! Love tulips - and I love the idea of them looking like the word for "Allah." Beautiful.

Great photos. Was only in Turkey once for a few hours on a layover, we managed to go to the historic district but that was all. Will have to go back someday for sure!

Beautiful pictures and colors. I was in Amsterdam last month, and got the opportunity to visit the amazing Keukenhof Tulip Garden. While blogging about it, I learned that the Turks introduced the tulips to Holland in the 1500s, and the Dutch speculated on the tulips until the bubble burst in 1637.

E. Thai, thank you! Yes, the next spot on our tulip festival plans will have to be Amsterdam. We were actually surprised by the profusion of tulips in Istanbul but were glad to see them there.

Tulip Festival takes all april to experience it. You can see tulips almost everywhere, parks, gren areas ect. not just in Emirgan Park. The Festival is going to be finished on April 30 but the tulips are not going to be removed :) http://wizardistanbul.com/events-fairs-concerts-in-istanbul/tulip-festival-2012/
