Lamps in Grand Bazaar

One of the best parts about traveling as we do is that I am rarely tempted to buy souvenirs or random stuff --- I know that anything we buy has to fit into our car and we don't have much car space left.  But, oh, these lamps at the Grand Bazaar were tempting.  I'm kind of obsessed with them, actually, especially because the vendors will sell a full chandelier for only $35 USD.  What do you think?  Worth the car space or not?

Had the same dilemma on my last trip. Round the world with only 20kgs. Killer! I say, only buy if you're absolutely in LOVE and will regret it for the rest of your trip if you don't have it. I saw something in Greece that I wanted and didn't get it because it was too expensive. I spent the last few weeks obsessing over it. That, or ship it home. LOL.

James - I know what you mean. I still regretting not buying this pashmina shawl in Italy almost 6 years ago. When I was in Italy this time, I tried finding it again but of course I couldn't find it. I ended up buying other Turkish souvenirs so I'm happy with what I've got!

I'm like you. I often travel with just a carry on so there isn't much room for souvenirs. So when I do bring home souvenirs, I look for small things we can use around the house. I have a lovely mosaic from Madaba, Jordan hanging in our guest room, a cheese knife with traditional cows on the handle from Appenzell, Switzerland, and a cameo shell from Ravello, Italy that all are conversation starters when I have guests. They also draw up find memories of these places when I enter certain rooms of my house. So treat yourself and make a little space for one of those beautiful lamps!

Love the idea of a cheese knife from Switzerland! I do the same thing --- I tend to buy very small souvenirs but the last 3 years of travel has meant that those small souvenirs accumulate into a lot of stuff. Ah well, I'm sure I'll be happy I own all this stuff sometime in the future.

I do like buying something from every country I visit, though stuff needs to be on the small side for convenience's sake. However, I went mad during my trip to Vietnam, and ended up with 2 canvases and 2 beautiful Vietnamese lanterns which I dragged across the country in my suitcase. Now that they're proudly displayed in my home, I know it was all worth it.

I completely understand what you mean about Southeast Asia. I bought way too much in that area because everything was so cheap and still great quality!

Totally worth the car space - I got lost in the grand bazaar when I was in Istanbul, luckily i escaped without having to buy any carpets

:) I didn't even go into a single carpet shop because I knew that they would suck me in.

Those lamps were really pretty! I try not to buy much when I travel either, and if I do buy something I want it to have a use. I bought one of those pretty bowls from the Grand Bazaar so I could display all of our leftover and defunct foreign currency in a nice way.

How could you not buy one of these beautiful lamps? These are something you can enjoy for a very long time. Love that first picture.
